Internationally renowned for its beauty and its rich cultural history, the city of Chester features alongside London, York, Stratford and Edinburgh on any tourist’s itinerary. Founded around 2,000 years ago by the Romans, Chester still retains some of the most complete Roman remains in the country, particularly the famous Walls which encircle the city. The 3 kilometre walk around them is highly recommended, taking in the Amphitheatre, Roman Gardens and the rest of Chester’s stunning sights.
Equally as famous are the unique Rows, the beautiful two-tiered shopping arcades prominent in the city centre. Other landmarks in Chester are its medieval half-timbered buildings, its 900 year old Cathedral, the Roman Port which is now the Roodee racecourse and the Eastgate Clock – the most photographed clock in the UK after Big Ben!
Aside from the wealth of historic and cultural sights, Chester has some of the best shopping and restaurants in the North West. Liverpool, Manchester and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village are all close by too, so you’ll never run out of shopping options!
If you feel like escaping the city and getting closer to nature, the outstanding Chester Zoo and the Blue Planet Aquarium are great days out. Chester is also situated on the edge of the rolling countryside of the Cheshire Plain, at the foot of the dramatic mountains of North Wales, providing a wide choice of outdoor activities, country pubs and places of tourist interest.
